Western & Southern Open: Swiatek makes third round, hands out bagel and breadstick to Collins

Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, defeated American wild card Danielle Collins 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the third round of the Western & Southern Open at the Linder Tennis Family Center in Cincinnati on Wednesday evening.

Swiatek, ranked No 1, will face the winner of the match between Chinese Qinwen Zheng and American wildcard Venus Williams next.

In the previous round of the Cincy Open, Collins, ranked No 34, defeated Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (6-3, 6-1).

“I kind of went on court without many expectations,” said Swiatek, who also beat Collins last week at the National Bank Open in Montreal. “Just knowing that I have to play what’s going to be possible for me that day, because I only practiced yesterday for, like, hour and 15 minutes.

“For us the priority between tournaments is to recover well — for me to be fresh. I will try to kind of catch up in terms of the conditions and my feeling during the tournament, if that’s possible. For sure today it wasn’t like the perfect situation, but I knew that I already had plenty of quick transitions between tournaments in my career and it was fine, so I will just try to do it one more time.”
