Romanian Simona Halep, the No 15 seed, advanced to the last 8 of the National Bank Open by winning against Swiss Jil Teichmann 6-2, 7-5 at the Aviva Centre in Toronto on Thursday evening.
Halep, ranked No 15, will play American Coco Gauff, the No 10 seed, next.
The Romanian defeated Croat lucky loser Donna Vekic (6-0, 6-2) and Chinese Shuai Zhang (6-4, 6-2) ahead of her victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Teichmann, ranked No 21, won against American wildcard Venus Williams (6-2, 6-3) and Estonian Anett Kontaveit, the second seed (6-4, 6-4).
