Pole Magda Linette reached the last 16 of the Wuhan Open when Ukrainian qualifier Lesia Tsurenko retired on Wednesday at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center.
Linette, ranked No 45, led 5-2 when Tsurenko, ranked No 96, pulled out with discomfort in her right arm.
The Pole will face Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 8 seed, next.
Magda Linette defeated Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 11 seed (6-2, 6-2) in the previous round of the Wuhan tournament.
In the previous round of the Wuhan tournament, the 35-year-old Ukrainian won against Katie Boulter (6-2, 7-5).
