Yastremska upsets top seed Ostapenko to reach Birmingham quarter-finals

Top seed Jelena Ostapenko was knocked out of the Birmingham Classic at Edgbaston Priory Club on Thursday in a three set battle by Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska.

The world No 79, from Ukraine, came from a set down to oust the former Roland-Garros champion Ostapenko 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 in two hours and 15 minutes to advance to the quarter-finals.

The Latvian led 3-1 in the final set but Yastremska fought back to win six of the last eight games in the match.

Yastremska will next meet eighth seed Shuai Zhang, who defeated Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
