Evans exits Toronto with Bublik defeat
The British No 1 made an early exit in Toronto as he continued his comeback from a bout of COVID-19

British No 1 Dan Evans is out of the National Bank Open in Toronto after a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik.
The 31-year-old also lost in his first match at the Washington Open last week, beaten 7-6(1), 6-0 by Brandon Nakashima.
He is still recovering from time out following a positive test for COVID-19 at the start of July, which forced him out of the Team GB Olympic squad. Jamie Murray replaced him as Neal Skupski’s doubles partner for the event.
Prior to that, he had reached the third round of Wimbledon – knocking out Feliciano Lopez and then Dusan Lajovic – before losing to Sebastian Korda 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Evans enjoyed some success on clay earlier in the year, reaching the semi-final of the singles and final of the doubles (alongside Skupski) at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters in April. He achieved a career-high ranking of world No 25 in June, and currently sits one spot lower.
