Garbiñe Muguruza beat Anett Kontaveit in straight sets to clinch her maiden WTA Finals title in Mexico. The sixth seed is the first Spaniard to win the season-ending tournament, edging out her Estonian opponent 6-3 7-5. Muguruza had already ended eighth-seeded Kontaveit’s 12-match winning streak in the round-robin stage of the tournament, and will now rise up to third in the WTA world rankings. The victory in Guadalajara is the former world number one’s 10th career WTA singles title and ends her 2021 on a high.
