Thiem pulls out of Australian Open, to return on clay in Cordoba
A former world No 3, Thiem has not played on the tour since June and has dropped to 15th in the latest rankings after being sidelined by a wrist injury

Former US Open champion Dominic Thiem has postponed his return to the professional circuit and pulled out of the Australian Open, which begins on January 17 in Melbourne.
Thiem has struggled with a wrist injury in recent months and has not competed on the tour since June, dropping from No 3 to No 15 in the rankings.
The Austrian was scheduled to return at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships earlier this month but withdrew from the tournament due to a cold.
In a statement posted on his social media, Thiem, who won the US Open in 2020, said the latest health setback has forced him and his team to reassess their options and that he will now return at the Cordoba Open, which is part of the Golden Swing in Latin America.
The Cordoba Open is scheduled to take place the week immediately after the Australian Open ends, and will start on January 31st. Diego Schwartzman, Benoit Paire and Juan Manuel Cerundolo are also scheduled to play in the clay-court event.
