Champion in Sanremo, contender for main draw spot in Monte-Carlo: Holger Rune’s epic Saturday
Two countries, two tournaments, two wins for the Dane on this super Saturday
Holger Rune (DEN) celebrates after winning a point against Matteo Berrettini (ITA) during his third round match at the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden (Panoramic)
Holger Rune lifted the trophy at the ATP Challenger event in Sanremo on Saturday morning, beating Francesco Passaro 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 – and promptly left Italy to head to the Monte-Carlo Masters.
There, he had a first round of qualifying match against Radu Albot – which he duly won, 6-2, 6-3.
The journey from Sanremo to the Monte-Carlo Country Club is a relatively straightforward one by road, hugging the coast for 44km, which should take around 45 minutes in normal traffic.
Rune would go on to defeat American Maxime Cressy, 6-3, 7-5, to take his spot in the main draw. He will face Aslan Karatsev in the first round on Tuesday.
