Martina Trevisan wins first WTA title in Rabat

Italy’s Martina Trevisan captured the first WTA singles title of her career, defeating American Clare Liu in the final of the Grand Prix Sar La Princesse Lalla Meryem in Rabat, Morocco on Saturday.

28-year-old Trevisan, ranked No 85 in the world, needed one hour and 32 minutes to beat Liu 6-1, 6-2 to win the WTA 250 event. Liu came into the final having won the WTA $125K event in Paris last week and was on an eight-match winning streak.

With the win, Tresvian, who reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros in 2020, becomes the fourth Italian to win the title in Morocco, joining countrywomen Rita Grande, Alberta Brianti and Francesca Schiavone.

Both players head into Paris for the French Open with some confidence. Trevisan meets Britain’s Harriet Dart in the first round and could face sixth seed Ons Jabeur in the second while Liu opens up against 24th seed Tamara Zidansek.
