US Open champion Emma Raducanu became the fifth Top 12 seed to exit the women’s draw at Roland-Garros with less than four days of play in Paris.
Playing in her first French Open, the 12th seed Brit got off to a fast start against the experienced Aliaksandra Sasnovich, of Belarus, winning the first set 6-3.
But the 28-year-old Sasnovich, ranked 47th in the world, bounced back to win the second set 6-1.
Raducanu held five break points in the third game on Sasnovich’s serve but was unable to break through. Once the Belarusian held her serve to lead 2-1, she dominated the next few games to complete the 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 win in two hours and four minutes.
Raducanu joins second seed Barbora Krejcikova, fifth seed Anett Kontaveit, sixth seed Ons Jabeur, 10th seed Garbine Muguruza and four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka (unseeded) on the sidelines of the second Grand Slam of the season with less than four days of play complete in Paris.
The loss takes Raducanu’s record in 2022 to 8 wins against 10 losses, including 6-5 on clay, her first full season on the European clay.
Sasnovich is through to the third round of the French Open for the first time in seven appearances at the French Open and she will next meet either 21st seeded Angelique Kerber or Elsa Jacquemot.
