Shortly after her sister Serena Williams sent the tennis world into a tizzy by announcing her return to the tennis tour, 42-year-old Venus Williams confirmed to her fans that she would not be playing at Wimbledon, but rather cheering her on from the sidelines.
But it looks like something has changed between then and yesterday as the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion descended on London and then reportedly decided to take a last-minute entry into the mixed doubles event along with Britain’s Jamie Murray.
Venus Williams has not played on the tour since August 2021 and could be testing the waters for a singles comeback during the summer hardcourt stretch just like Serena did with the women’s doubles event at Eastbourne last week.
It is almost certain that the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club (AELTC) will grant the duo a wild card. Besides her seven Grand Slam titles in singles, Williams has also won 16 Grand Slam doubles titles – 14 in women’s doubles and two in mixed (both coming in 1998). She has picked an equally capable partner in Murray, who has two men’s doubles Grand Slams and five mixed doubles Majors on his resume).
The sign-in for the Wimbledon mixed doubles event is on Wednesday and the event is scheduled to begin on Friday.
