Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka edged out No 16 seed Dan Evans 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-5 to move into the semi-finals of the Citi Open at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington on Friday.
Nishioka, ranked No 96, will face Russian Andrey Rublev, the top seed, next.
Ahead of his win on Friday, the Japanese won against American Jenson Brooksby (6-4, 6-3), Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 11 seed (3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2) and Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 7 seed (7-6 (2), 7-6 (1)).
Evans, ranked No 40, defeated Kyle Edmund (6-1, 6-2) and American Taylor Fritz, the No 3 seed (3-6, 7-6 (6), 4-1 ret.) earlier in the tournament.
