34-year-old Angelique Kerber, a three-time Grand Slam champion, has announced her pregnancy.
The German legend took to social media on Wednesday to inform the world that she would be missing this year’s US Open as she embarks on a new journey.
“I really wanted to play the US Open but eventually I decided that two against one just isn‘t a fair competition,” she wrote on Twitter, including the baby and baby bottle emojis after her text for anyone who might have been confused.
“For the next months, I will take a break from traveling the globe as a tennis player but then again, I believe it’s for the best possible reason!” Kerber wrote. “I will miss all of you.”
The German last played at Wimbledon, where she reached the third round. The current world No 52 is 13-11 in a season that saw her add her 14th career title in Strasbourg this spring.
