Former champion Andreescu into US open third round; faces in-form Garcia next

Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu is through to the third round of the US Open by defeating the 15th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets in New York City on Wednesday night.

Andreescu, who won the singles title in 2019 for her big breakthrough, was impressive in a 6-2, 6-4 win over the left-handed Brazilian who has had an incredible season to break into the top 20 for the first time in her career.

Andreescu saved all five break points on her serve in the contest and broke her opponent on three occasions. The match, the final one on the Louis Armstrong Stadium, ended past 1 AM New York time.

The Canadian, who took a few months off from the sport at the end of last year, needed three sets to win her first round match over French wildcard Harmony Tan (6-0, 3-6, 6-1).

Garcia leads Andreescu 1-0 in head-to-head

Ranked No 48 in the world, Andreescu will next meet the red-hot Caroline Garcia. The 17th seeded Frenchwoman was also impressive as she defeated Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 6-1 to extend her winning streak to 10 matches – coming straight off the title in Cincinnati.

Garcia leads the head-to-head with Andreescu by 1-0, having won their only meeting in July this year – a three-set win in the final of Bad Homburg.
