Eye of the Coach #63: Why Alcaraz needs to go slow to take control against Sinner
Coach Patrick Mouratoglou looks at the eagerly-anticipated match-up between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner at the US Open
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner meet in the quarter-finals of the US Open on Wednesday night, an eagerly anticipated match and one that is likely to be a regular fixture at the business end of slams in the years to come.
In the latest episode of Eye of the Coach, Patrick Mouratoglou analyses the match-up and explains why Alcaraz’s best bet could be to slow down the pace in order to be able to take control.
Key Moments
0.01: It’s interesting because it’s clearly the future of the game,” Mouratoglou says.
0.15: “Both Sinner and Alcaraz are both fearless,” the coach adds. “On the big points, they go for it but they don’t go stupid.”
0.34 “The only thing Alcaraz doesn’t like is when he is not able to be as aggressive as he wants. He likes to be in control. Sinner is tough because he’s more aggressive and in any situation he’s dangerous, he can hit a winner from any part of the court.”
1.07: “One of the keys for Alcaraz is to slow down the pace. To play higher, to be able to accelerate himself. If he goes too flat, as he did a bit in previous matches against Sinner, then Sinner loves it. Slow down to accelerate. That’s probably what he’s going to try to do.”
