A few days before the start of the Australian Open 2022, while the “Djokovic affair” was dividing the tennis world, good old Bernard Tomic devoted himself to lightening the mood.
“I can win Wimbledon,” said the man who was then 257th in the world.
“We all know this, I know this — I’m probably a top 10 player in the world on grass. I will do it, before I retire, I will do it, that’s for sure.”
Now ranked over 400th in the ATP rankings, the 30-year-old Australian is a far cry from his former glory as a former Wimbledon quarter-finalist – in 2011, at 18 years old – who had finished 2016 in the top 20.
Without forcing his talent, as Fabrice Santoro once confided in an anecdote told on beIN SPORTS: “I played the IPTL with him (Bernard Tomic) and he told me: ‘I’m top 20 without having breaking into a jog this year. If one day I’m top 10 like that, I’ll write a book.'”
