Norrie battles past Monteiro, advances to quarter-finals at Rio

Second seed Cameron Norrie moved into the last 8 of the Rio Open by beating Brazilian Thiago Monteiro 7-5, 7-5 at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday night.
The British No 1, the current ATP win leader with 15 in 2023, earned a whopping 21 break points and converted five to reach the quarter-finals against the home favourite.
Monteiro scratched and clawed to say alive, saving a trio of match points while serving against Norrie at 5-3 in the second set. He then broke back in the next game to level at five-all.
But Norrie responded in kind, breaking for 6-5 and finally locking down his triumph by converting his sixth match point at the two hour and 30-minute mark to jump to 15-3 on the season.
The British No 1, ranked No 13, will face Hugo Dellien of Bolivia next.
Cameron Norrie won against Argentinian lucky loser Juan Manuel Cerundolo (7-5, 6-1) in the previous round of the Brazilian Open.
In the previous round of the Brazilian Open, Monteiro, ranked No 83, edged out Austrian Dominic Thiem (6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (2)).
