Czech Karolina Muchova reached the second round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells by edging out Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 on Thursday.
Muchova, ranked No 76, will play No 14 seed and former world No 1 Victoria Azarenka next.
