Madrid Masters: Lucky loser Struff edges out valiant Shelton to make third round
Jan-Lennard Struff edged out Ben Shelton 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 on Saturday and will play the winner of the match between Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 7 seed, and Serb Dusan Lajovic in the next round
German lucky loser Jan-Lennard Struff moved into the third round of the Madrid Masters by edging out American Ben Shelton, the No 32 seed, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 at the Caja Magica on Saturday.
Struff, ranked No 65, will play the winner of the match between Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 7 seed, and Serb Dusan Lajovic next.
Ahead of his victory, the 33-year-old German won against Italian Lorenzo Sonego (6-3, 6-1).
