Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, the No 30 seed, edged out American Madison Keys, the No 19 seed, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the last eight of the Italian Open at the Foro Italico in Rome on Monday.
Kalinina, ranked No 47, will face the winner of the match between Colombian qualifier Camila Osorio and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the No 12 seed, next.
The Ukrainian defeated Russian Anna Blinkova (6-2, 6-2) and American Sofia Kenin (6-4, 6-2) ahead of her victory.
In the previous rounds of the Rome tournament, Keys, ranked No 23, won against Pole qualifier Magdalena Frech (6-3, 6-2) and Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, the No 14 seed (W/O).
