Beatriz Haddad Maia got her quest for the WTA Elite Trophy started in Zhuhai with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Madison Keys.
It is the Brazilian’s first WTA Elite Trophy event, and she is participating in both singles and doubles (with Veronika Kudermetova) as she seeks her first singles final this year – although her victory over Keys is her eighth over a player ranked in the Top 20 so far this season.
This victory puts her at 2-3 in singles matches in China in 2023.
Keys – seeded second in Zhuhai – has now not won a match since the US Open.
