Former world No 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep has filed a formal appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), asking them to overturn the four-year ban she received from the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) for doping violations.
The court confirmed on Tuesday that it has registered the appeal of Halep, who was handed the ban in September and is currently not able to return to the tour until October 2026. CAS said a panel of arbitrators will rule on the appeal but did not give a timeline for a decision.
“The CAS Panel’s decision will be final and binding, with the exception of the parties’ right to file an appeal to the Swiss Federal Tribunal within 30 days on limited grounds,” an official statement from CAS said.
Halep received her ban for failing a drug test at the 2022 US Open and for irregularities in her Athlete Biological Passport.
The Romanian has repeatedly denied that she took any banned substances intentionally and said that they entered her system through contaminated nutritional supplements. Despite her lengthy ban, Halep was back on the practice courts this week, posting a video of her training on social media.
