Australian wildcard Taylah Preston edged out Argentinian Julia Riera, the No 8 seed, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 to reach the last eight of the Puerto Vallarta Open on Wednesday.
Preston, ranked No 192, will face Ukrainian Yulia Starodubtseva next.
The 18-year-old Australian won against Spaniard Nuria Parrizas Diaz (6-4, 6-1) in the previous round.
During the 32, Riera, ranked No 116, benefited from the abandonment of American Ann Li (3-6, 7-5, 1-0).
