World No 8 Cobolli crashes out to Hanfmann in Montreal second round

Flavio Cobolli has become the first seeded casualty of the National Bank Open presented by Rogers. The Italian No 6 seed and world No 8 was beaten 7-6(5), 7-6(2) by Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann on Wednesday night, going down in two tight tiebreaks in the second round.

For the 34-year-old Hanfmann, ranked No 45, it was a statement win — his first victory over a top-10 player in three years. Having earlier seen off Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi (6-1, 4-6, 6-2), he now meets the winner of Nuno Borges and No 26 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

The result underlines just how uneven Cobolli’s breakthrough season has been. A Roland-Garros finalist and Wimbledon quarter-finalist in 2026, he has laced those headline runs with jarring early exits — first-round losses at Halle, at Umag (to Roman Burruchaga) and now in Montreal.

He has now lost his opening match at a tournament for the eighth time in 2026 (9-8 in first matches). Remarkably, the inconsistency hasn’t hurt his bigger picture – deep runs at the majors still have him sitting fourth in the ATP Race.
