Houston Open: Thompson makes last eight

Australian Jordan Thompson, the No 6 seed, edged out American Aleksandar Kovacevic 4-6, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (7) to advance to the last eight of the Houston Open at River Oaks Country Club on Thursday.

Thompson, ranked No 33, will play the winner of the match between Australian James Duckworth and American Frances Tiafoe, the No 3 seed, next.

The Australian defeated Chinese qualifier Yibing Wu (6-4, 6-4) in the previous round of the Houston tournament.

In the previous round of the Houston tournament, Kovacevic, ranked No 98, edged out Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis (7-6 (3), 6-7 (2), 6-4).
