Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 21 seed, advanced to the last eight of the Madrid Masters by defeating German Alexander Zverev, the No 4 seed, 6-3, 6-4 at the Caja Magica.
Cerundolo, ranked No 22, will face American Taylor Fritz, the No 12 seed, next.
Earlier in the tournament, the Argentinian beat Hungarian Fabian Marozsan (6-2, 7-6 (5)) and American Tommy Paul, the No 15 seed (6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-2).
Zverev, ranked No 5, beat Croat Borna Coric (6-3, 6-2) and Canadian Denis Shapovalov (6-4, 7-5) in the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament.
