Italian Fabio Fognini, the No 7 seed, advanced to the quarter-finals of the Swiss Open by edging out Peruvian qualifier Juan Pablo Varillas 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 at the Roy Emerson Arena.
Fognini, ranked No 80, will face the winner of the match between Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed, and Serb Hamad Medjedovic next.
The 37-year-old Italian defeated French qualifier Titouan Droguet (6-4, 6-3) in the previous round of the Gstaad tournament.
In the previous round of the Gstaad tournament, Varillas, ranked No 162, edged out Austrian Dominic Thiem (6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (4)).
