Australian Jordan Thompson, the No 7 seed, won against American wildcard Reilly Opelka 6-4, 6-3 to reach the last 16 of the Citi Open at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington on Thursday night.
Thompson, ranked No 33, will face Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, the No 9 seed, next.
In the previous round of the Washington D.C. tournament, Opelka, ranked No 371, edged out Australian James Duckworth (6-7 (12), 7-5, 6-4).
