Birrell battles into Austin Open second round
Kimberly Birrell scraped past Yue Yuan in a pair of tiebreaks on Monday in Austin. Birrell will meet either Kaja Juvan or Ena Shibahara in the last 16.

Australian Kimberly Birrell defeated Chinese Yue Yuan, the No 4 seed, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) to advance to the second round of the Austin Open at the Westwood Country Club on Monday night.
Birrell, ranked No 76, will next face the winner of a match between Slovenian qualifier Kaja Juvan and Japanese qualifier Ena Shibahara.
