“Something I never dreamed could happen” – Machac relishes Acapulco triumph but voices injury concerns

Tomas Machac is celebrating his Mexican Open triumph cautiously ahead of the Indian Wells Masters

Czechia’s Tomas Machac became an ATP Tour champion for the first time when he defeated Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the 2025 Mexican Open final on Saturday.

Playing his second tour-level final, Machac blunted Davidovich Fokina’s tough attack in the first set and sailed through in the second to win 7-6 (6), 6-2 in an hour, 37 minutes.

The Czech failed in his first title clash, losing to Casper Ruud (7-5, 6-3) at the 2024 Geneva Open—an ATP 250 event. He, however, rose to the occasion at ATP 500 Acapulco, which he feels was unbelievable.

“It means a lot,” Machac the ATPTour.com. “It is something I never dreamed could happen. Especially at an ATP 500, so it feels amazing for me. I was working very hard in the past year, so I am happy I can achieve something that shows me I am going the right way.”

Machac has been making great strides on the tour lately and will breach the top 20 for a career-high ranking in the next ATP update. For that, he has his coach Daniel Vacek among other team and family members to thank.

“I think the people around me who are helping me when I am struggling. It is very important because in those moments when the stress is in the court you just feel the good people around you will try and help you in your career. It helps me a lot as when I achieve those moments I will call those people and without them I would not be here. My family, my girlfriend and cousins. Plus my coach and my team. My chiropractor, my physio from Australia, my fitness coach. We are all working together and the result is going up and up.”

The 24-year-old, however, also voiced an injury concern upon being asked about his celebration plans following the greatest achievement of his career to date.

“I will celebrate with my family,” he added. “I will now try to recover and be ready for Indian Wells as I feel a little bit injured but hopefully it is nothing serious. I have work to do and after I will celebrate.”
