Czech Tomas Machac maintained momentum at the Miami Masters in Monday as he beat American Reilly Opelka 7-6 (1), 6-3 to reach the last 16.
The No 20 seed was out-aced 18-9 by Opelka but took the only break point of the match in the second set and finished off with an ace as he set up a clash with Russian Roman Safiullin or Jakub Mensik.
In the previous round of the Miami Open, Tomas Machac won against Italian Matteo Arnaldi (6-2, 1-6, 6-3).
Opelka, ranked No 114, won against wildcard Christopher Eubanks (6-3, 7-6 (4)) and edged out Dane Holger Rune, the No 11 seed (4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5)) in the previous rounds of the Miami Open.
