Charleston Open: Zheng beats Mertens to reach quarter-finals
The third seeded Chinese woman will play No 9 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the next round

China’s Qinwen Zheng, the No 3 seed, reached the quarter-finals of the Charleston Open by winning against Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 13 seed, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Thursday.
Zheng, ranked No 8, will face No 9 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova next.
The 22-year-old Chinese beat Greek Maria Sakkari (6-4, 6-1) earlier in the week.
In the previous round of the tournament, Mertens, ranked No 28, defeated Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva (6-3, 7-5).
