It didn’t look promising for Lorenzo Musetti when he needed medical attention after just two games, and Monte-Carlo Masters reigning champion Stefanos Tsitsipas cruised to a 6-1 first set.

But the Italian took his time and worked his way back into it, and claimed his first win over a Top 10 player since October 2024; more than that, that Top 10 player is the man who has won three of the four previous editions of this tournament.

“I’m really happy and proud of this win,” said Musetti afterwards, who said he felt pain in his foot in the first point of the match, hence why he needed medical advice.

“I was a little confused by this. I didn’t play on the game plan that we talked about before the match. Afterwards, I think I showed my tennis, and the tennis that represents clay the most. That’s really beautiful. To cry together, to win together, that’s really nice.”

Musetti hit 23 winners to Tsitsipas’s 24, but 32 unforced errors to his opponent’s 45, and had a much better first serve percentage, 76 to 49.

More than that, he took his chances, taking three of his six break point opportunities, while Tsitsipas took three of an incredible 17.

Musetti is now into his first semi-final at ATP Masters 1000 level with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory in two hours and 20 minutes.

Tsitsipas was playing in his fifth consecutive quarter-final in Monte-Carlo, and had beaten Musetti on all five of their previous meetings – four of which had been on clay.
