Ons Jabeur announced this Thursday on her social media that she will be stepping away temporarily from the WTA tour. This decision comes after several months of physical and mental struggles, which she explained in a heartfelt message to her fans.
“Over the past two years, I’ve pushed myself a lot, played through injuries, and faced many challenges. But deep down, I haven’t truly felt happy on the court for some time now,” wrote the Tunisian player, currently ranked 71st in the world.
At 30 years old, Jabeur has chosen to withdraw from competition for a while to take care of herself, both physically and mentally. “Tennis is a beautiful sport. But right now, I feel the need to step back and, finally, think about myself. To breathe, to heal, and to rediscover the joy of simply living.”
Touched by the many messages of support she has received over the past months, the 2023 Wimbledon finalist reassured her fans: “Even away from the court, I’ll stay close to you in another way. I’ll keep sharing this new chapter with all of you.”
No specific duration has been given for this break, which follows a disappointing Wimbledon for Jabeur, where she had to retire in the first round against Viktoriya Tomova. A three-time Grand Slam finalist between 2022 and 2023, she has not made it past the round of 16 in a Major since the French Open last year.
