Ons Jabeur suffered a heartbreak on the opening day of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships as she was forced to retire against Viktoriya Tomova in the first round on Monday. She was trailing 7-6 (5), 2-0 when she decided to quit.
Jabeur was reduced to tears early in the match as she walked to her chair after five games. She called for the tournament physio promptly and had her blood pressure and vitals checked. She then opted for a medical timeout for further treatment.
The Tunisian returned to court after a 14-minute halt and competed strenuously but couldn’t maintain her level in the second set, hence retiring due to illness.
This was Jabeur’s earliest exit from Wimbledon since 2019. She reached the finals of the grass-court Major in 2022 and 2023, losing to Elena Rybakina and Marketa Vondrousova, respectively. In 2024, she reached the third round and lost to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.
