Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 3 seed, won against Canadian wildcard Victoria Mboko 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Washington Open at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center on Wednesday night.

It’s the seventh time this season that the world No. 12 has reached this stage of the competition on the WTA Tour. She is aiming for a second title in 2025 after winning the Strasbourg tournament last May.

Rybakina, ranked No 12, will play the winner of the match between American wildcard Venus Williams and Pole Magdalena Frech, the No 5 seed, next.

In the previous round of the Washington tournament, Mboko, ranked No 88, defeated Russian Anastasia Potapova (6-2, 6-4).
