Washington Open: Raducanu outclasses Osaka to reach quarter-finals
Emma Raducanu won against Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-2 on Thursday evening. She’ll face Greek wildcard Maria Sakkari in the next round

Emma Raducanu made a big statement on Thursday in Washington. In a highly anticipated matchup between two Grand Slam champions, the 22-year-old Brit showed poise and control to dispatch Naomi Osaka in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, and advance to her third career quarter-final at this event.
Naomi Osaka, playing thanks to a wild card, had impressed in her opening-round win over Yulia Putintseva (6-2, 7-5). But against Raducanu, the Japanese star was out of rhythm. Despite some glimpses of her former self, Osaka struggled badly on serve, landing only 46% of first serves and committing seven double faults, along with a flurry of unforced errors.
On the other side of the net, Raducanu looked calm and composed, backing up her solid first-round win over Marta Kostyuk (7-6, 6-4). Amid constant scrutiny surrounding her off-court life — including her rumored relationship with Carlos Alcaraz — Raducanu continues to let her tennis do the talking. No distractions, no noise — just results.
This victory marks her eighth of the season and sets up a promising quarter-final clash against Greek wild card Maria Sakkari. Raducanu leads their head-to-head 3-0, and will be eyeing a first semi-final of 2024 with growing confidence.
