Lucky Loser No More: Moutet marches into Washington quarter-finals
Called into the main draw as a last-minute lucky loser, Corentin Moutet continues his strong run in Washington. The Frenchman defeated defending champion Daniel Evans in straight sets (6-2, 7-6) to reach the quarter-finals, where he will face Daniil Medvedev.

Corentin Moutet is making the most of his unexpected opportunity at the ATP 500 in Washington. Given a second chance after Holger Rune’s withdrawal, the Frenchman hasn’t looked back. After demolishing fellow Frenchman Alexandre Muller (6-0, 6-1) in the second round, he backed it up on Thursday against last year’s champion, Daniel Evans.
Playing with confidence and clarity on Stadium Court, the 25-year-old outclassed the Brit 6-2, 7-6 [4]. Moutet hit 27 winners, balanced with 24 unforced errors, and converted four of seven break point chances. Most importantly, he held his nerve in the second-set tiebreak to close out the match in straight sets.
Now it’s Medvedev
Ranked No. 59 in the world, Moutet is now into his first-ever quarter-final in Washington, and his third ATP quarter-final this season. Up next: a showdown with No. 8 seed Daniil Medvedev — their first meeting on hard courts.
It’s a tough ask, but for Moutet, a player known for his unpredictability and flair, it’s also a well-deserved reward for seizing the moment.
