Pole Iga Swiatek, the second seed, was seriously challenged on Thursday evening, but ultimately survived a scare from Dutchwoman Suzan Lamens, edging her out 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the third round of the U.S. Open.

The hard-fought victory at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York extended Swiatek’s winning streak to seven matches, including her recent Wimbledon and Cincinnati titles, and kept her on track for a potential return to the world No. 1 ranking.

The match, which lasted over two hours, was a compelling display of contrasting fortunes. Swiatek, the world No. 2 and a six-time Grand Slam champion, entered the match as a heavy favorite. This was her first career meeting against Lamens, a player who was making her US Open main draw debut and facing a Top 10 opponent for only the second time.

Swiatek lost the second set

The early signs pointed to a routine victory for the Pole, who dominated the first set 6-1 with a powerful and precise game, seemingly leaving the Dutch underdog with no answers. However, Lamens, ranked world No. 66, refused to be intimidated.

Displaying her tenacious and fearless style of play, she settled into the match, breaking Swiatek’s serve multiple times in the second set. Swiatek’s game became less consistent, and she was visibly agitated by her opponent’s valiant efforts. The Dutchwoman capitalized on her chances, taking the second set 6-4 and forcing the match to a decider.

In the final set, Swiatek’s championship pedigree shone through. She regained her composure and improved her serving, a key factor in her victory. While Lamens continued to fight, even narrowing a 4-1 deficit, Swiatek was able to close out the match.

The stats reflect the back-and-forth nature of the contest. Swiatek hit 26 winners to Lamens’ 13, demonstrating her offensive firepower. She also proved more effective on key points, converting six of her twelve break point opportunities. Lamens, by comparison, converted four of her nine break points. Swiatek also recorded seven aces to Lamens’ one.

Swiatek – Kalinskaya next

After the match, Swiatek reflected on her performance, stating, “I did some mistakes… I felt like it depended on me and if I made mistakes or not, sometimes I did.”

She added that she was happy with how she served in the third set and was glad she won. With the win, Swiatek now advances to face the No. 29 seed, Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya, in the next round. Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-1, 7-5.

The two have split their two previous meetings, setting the stage for another intriguing clash as Swiatek continues her quest for a second U.S. Open title.
