Women’s No 3 seed Coco Gauff survived another day at the 2025 US Open despite a troublesome serve. She beat Croat Donna Vekic in straight sets (7-6 (5), 6-2) on Thursday to qualify for the third round.

Gauff’s double-fault tally for the tournament swelled to 18 after she added eight more while playing with teary eyes at times. The sobbing spilled over to her on-court interview, where she tried to shrink away and hide her tears from the crowd that cheered her on to finally draw a smile.

On the other hand, Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong was all smiles after his historic win that made him the first tennis player from his country to reach the third round of a Grand Slam.

Wong defeated Australian Adam Walton in four sets (7-6 (5), 6-2, 4-6, 6-4) on Court 10 of the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. In the main draw of a Major for the first time, the world No 173 overcame Aleksander Kovacevic in the first round and will now face No 15 seed Andrey Rublev for more history.

Paul survives a marathon, Tsitsipas doesn’t

Stefanos Tsitsipas’ rough patch at the Grand Slam level continued on Thursday as he failed to close it out against Germany’s Daniel Altmaier.

Tsitsipas led 2-1 after the third set and had a match point in the fifth, but Altmaier fared better under pressure and clinched a 7-6 (5), 1-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win after four hours, 26 minutes. The match brought an end to the Greek’s Grand Slam quest for the season. He could not reach the third round of any Major this year.

Similarly, Tommy Paul found himself in deep waters against Portugal’s Nuno Borges despite winning the first two sets. Borges saved two match points in the third set and fought back to force a fifth, where Paul, rallied by the home crowd, regrouped and finished it on his third match point.
