Holger Rune will not be seen on a tennis court in 2025. The Dane, who was forced to retire in the semi-finals of the Stockholm tournament on Saturday against Ugo Humbert after leaving the court on one leg in tears, announced on Sunday via his social media that he had indeed suffered an Achilles tendon rupture.

“It’s gonna be a while before I can step on court again. It’s tough. I had so much joy on court in Stockholm and it’s unbearable to think that I will not feel this energy for some time now.” said Holger Rune on his Instagram post.

“My Achilles is full broken on the proximal part meaning I need operation already next week and from here rehabilitation. Thank you for all your support now and always . Without you nothing would be the same . See you as soon as possible.”

While leading 6-4, 2-2 in the Stockholm semi-final, Holger Rune felt a sharp pain in his left foot during a lateral movement. In tears on his chair, the Dane was forced to retire and left the court on one leg.

It marks the end of a mixed 2025 season for Rune, who won in Barcelona, reached the final in Indian Wells, but was unable to progress beyond the fourth round in any Grand Slam. He now faces a long road to recovery, with a potential return to the courts not expected until spring 2026.
