Sinner on his recurring pain at the Rolex Paris Masters: “It’s a challenge but it doesn’t worry me”
At the Rolex Paris Masters, Jannik Sinner is repeatedly struggling with an unidentified pain early in matches that affects his movement and mimics the look of cramps, though he insists it is something else entirely.

Jannik Sinner has opened up (a little…) on a recurring mysterious pain that flares up early in his matches at the Rolex Paris Masters. In his interviews following his second-round win against Bergs and his second-round victory over Francisco Cerundolo, both without losing a set, Sinner described the pain as “a bit difficult, especially the movement,” and spoke of physical recovery challenges that have persisted through recent weeks.
“The most difficult is the movement” he said after his first round. “Why?” he was asked. “I don’t know. I really don’t know” he answered, puzzling the international reporters talking to him.
“I’ve been through a lot during the past few weeks you know”, Sinner added. “So it’s normal. One more night now. I’m very happy to finish under one hour and a half, which is good for me. And now I hope that I can sleep very well and and be ready for tomorrow. I will.”
Sinner : “not much time to recover”
This mysterious pain follows on from cramps that forced him to retire against Tallon Griekspoor in Shanghai and a grueling final in Vienna against Alexander Zverev. However, Sinner insisted in his pre-tournament press conference that “it was not the same issue at all” between the two events and described the Vienna final as “very physical,” reflecting the toll of playing five matches in a row with “not much time to recover.”
“My body feels good now, but I am a bit tired,” he summed up. Sinner explained that this pain, which sometimes impacts his movement on court, makes the early stages of matches especially challenging: “First rounds are always difficult, the movement is not easy at the start, but I feel a little bit better as the tournament goes on.” Yet, Sinner emphasized his pragmatic approach: “I am getting used to the condition, taking it match by match, and I don’t let it worry me.”

“I have never played well here”
His awareness of the tough nature of the Paris Masters shone through as he confirmed, “I have never played well here,” he recalls round after round. “It’s a very difficult tournament because it’s at the end of the season and the conditions here are unique.”
Sinner’s journey at the Rolex Paris Masters
• 2021 : 0 win, 1 loss (Alcaraz)
• 2022 : 0 win, 1 loss (Huessler)
• 2023 : 1 win, withdrew
• 2024 : Didn’t play
His sole goal is to “play better than in previous years,” he highlighted, one day before his quarterfinal against in-form Ben Shelton, No. 6 in the world. Sinner has not lost any set against Shelton since autumn 2023 and their first encounter in Shanghai, won by the American. And yes, for the first time of his life, Sinner won two matches at the Rolex Paris Masters.
