Paris Masters: Sinner wins his first Masters 1000 title of 2025 and returns to No. 1 spot

Jannik Sinner won the tournament on Sunday against Felix Auger-Aliassime (6-4, 7-6). He’s the best indoor player in the world.

If Jannik Sinner were to win a Masters 1000 in 2025, after all, it was indeed this one. The Italian often repeated at the start of the week that he had “never played well” at the Rolex Paris Masters tournament. That is now a quote for history books.

The man who has dominated indoor tennis for two years won the tournament for the first time on Sunday, without losing a set, leaving no real hope to his opponent Félix Auger-Aliassime, who was broken at the start and then faced a difficult chase throughout a final that he could not sustain over three sets (6-4, 7-6).

“It was very a high-quality match, Sinner said. He was serving incredibly well when I had couple of break chances in the second set. But has been an amazing run, Vienna and here. I’m super happy, and of course now we are looking forward to Turin. But I also want to enjoy this moment. It’s a very special day. I’m also relieved, you know. A week like this has been very intense.”

Strangely, this is the first (and only) Masters 1000 title won in 2025 by the man who will return Monday to the world No. 1 spot, five days after Carlos Alcaraz’s surprising loss to Cameron Norrie. Suspended earlier this year for a positive test, Sinner missed Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo and Madrid, lost two finals to Alcaraz (in Rome and Cincinnati), withdrew from the Canadian Open, and retired in Shanghai.

Sinner, the best indoor player in the world

This result allows Félix Auger-Aliassime to rise to ninth in the world rankings, qualifying for the ATP Finals but without certainty of keeping his place. Auger-Aliassime will compete in Metz this week to protect himself from a possible return by Lorenzo Musetti, who is entered in Athens.

Sinner had a start of the week marked by some visible physical issues, after his victory in Vienna a week ago, against Belgian Zizou Bergs (6-4, 6-2) and then Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo (7-5, 6-1), before unfolding clinical tennis that makes him almost unplayable when free of disturbance against Ben Shelton, No. 5 seed (6-3, 6-3), and defending champion Alexander Zverev, No. 3 seed (6-0, 6-1).

These five wins bring his total to 26 consecutive indoor victories on the ATP circuit, including Davis Cup matches. Undefeated since the 2023 ATP Finals final against Novak Djokovic, Sinner went on to win Rotterdam 2024, Vienna 2024, the 2024 ATP Finals, the 2024 Davis Cup, Vienna again, and the 2025 Rolex Paris Masters. He will be the big favorite for the ATP Finals starting next Sunday in Turin.

His No. 1 ranking will directly depend on Alcaraz’s results, who is sure to reclaim his place if he reaches the final. Based on what was seen this week in Paris, everything remains open.
