Lorenzo Musetti admitted he was not at 100% physically during his ATP Finals debut against Taylor Fritz (lost 6-3, 6-4), citing the grueling schedule that brought him straight from the Athens final on Saturday to Turin with little rest.
Musetti, who lost to Novak Djokovic in a three-hour Athens final, said he felt the effects of fatigue throughout the match, especially in his legs and reflexes. “I knew I couldn’t be at 100% in shape, especially physically,” Musetti said. “Mentally, I’m really glad I’m here, but physically, I felt heavy and slow.”
Musetti : “a little bit slower in everything”
Musetti described the challenge of adapting to the different court conditions between Athens and Turin, noting the higher bounce and faster pace in Turin made it harder to recover. “I felt physically that I was a little bit slower in everything I was doing,” he said.
“In terms of reflexes, in terms of feeling the ball, I was not feeling it well.” Musetti clarified that he did not experience cramps during the match, as a reporter suggested, but his legs were notably heavy and his movement was sluggish. “I didn’t have cramps,” he said. “But when I tried to serve, my legs were quite heavy.”
Despite the physical strain, Musetti praised Fritz’s performance and acknowledged the American was the better player on the day. Musetti will try to get his first ATP Tour win on Tuesday at 8:30 pm.
