Aryna Sabalenka powers past Naomi Osaka into Indian Wells quarterfinals

Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the No 1 seed, defeated Japanese Naomi Osaka, the No 16 seed, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday evening.
The world No 1 required 80 minutes to dismantle the four-time Grand Slam champion in a high-velocity encounter on Stadium 1. Sabalenka established dominance from the baseline early, utilizing her superior weight of shot to prevent Osaka from finding a rhythm.
The Belarusian saved both break points she faced while converting three of her own, she maintained scoreboard pressure throughout the contest to improve her 2026 record to 14-1.
The key statistical indicator was Sabalenka’s serving efficiency, highlighted by eight aces and a 75% first-serve percentage. Osaka struggled to match this consistency, committing four double faults and winning just 33% of points behind her second delivery.
Mboko or Anisimova next
The Belarusian opened the match with immediate pressure, breaking the Osaka serve in the second and fourth games to race to a 4-1 lead. Although Osaka attempted to increase her aggression in the second set, Sabalenka’s defensive coverage forced the Japanese star into uncharacteristic errors during long rallies. A decisive break in the eighth game of the second set allowed Sabalenka to serve out the victory 6-2, 6-4 with a final unreturned first serve.
Sabalenka advances to the last eight where she will play the winner of the match between Canadian Victoria Mboko, the No 10 seed, and American Amanda Anisimova, the No 6 seed. This quarterfinal appearance keeps the top seed on track for her maiden title in the California desert following two previous runner-up finishes.
