Australian qualifier Talia Gibson defeated Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 7 seed, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 in the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday evening.
The match lasted one hour and 58 minutes as the world No 112 dismantled one of the most consistent players on the tour to secure her first career victory over a top 10 opponent.
Gibson started the contest with aggressive baseline hitting to claim the opening set before the Italian increased her intensity to force a decider. Because the 21-year-old Australian maintained her composure and “free-swinging” approach during the high-pressure moments of the third set, she dominated the final six games to secure the upset.
Gibson : “It meant the world“
Gibson advances to the quarterfinals to face the winner of the match between Filipino Alexandra Eala, the No 31 seed, and Czech Linda Noskova, the No 14 seed, that will close the day at Indian Wells. Having entered the 2026 season with only two career WTA main-draw wins, the Australian has now secured four victories in just six days during this tournament.
“It meant the world, I mean, there is not enough words to describe how I’m feeling, really,” Gibson said regarding her milestone victory. “I felt extremely calm and felt like I was just able to go out there free-swinging and just really enjoy the experience.”
The key statistical standout was Gibson’s ability to protect her second serve in the final set, winning 71% of those points compared to just 43% for Paolini. While the Italian struggled to find depth, the Australian qualifier capitalized on short balls to strike 28 winners throughout the three-set battle.
Gibson overcame an early break in the first set to navigate through the Italian’s heavy forehand and clinch the opener 7-5. Although Paolini “stepped it up” to sweep the second set 6-2, the momentum shifted back to the underdog immediately at the start of the third. Gibson broke serve three times in the final set to finalize the 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 scoreline and continue her breakout run in the California desert.
“I didn’t put any pressure on myself going out there today, Gibson said. Just allowed myself to swing freely and just fully commit to my game. I know it was going to be an extreme challenge playing her today. I knew that she’s an amazing competitor, so when she did kind of step it up, that bit in the second, I knew all I could do is just give it my best. I played extremely well in that third set.”
