German No 4 seed Alexander Zverev defeated Frenchman Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-3 on Thursday evening to become the first player to qualify for the BNP Paribas Open semifinals.

The world No 4 produced a performance characterized by such immense stability that he controlled the tempo of the quarterfinal from the opening games. Zverev utilized his superior reach and service consistency (71% 1st serves in, 75% of these won) to frustrate the young Frenchman throughout the 78-minute contest.

Although Fils attempted to inject pace into the rallies, he struggled with his timing and committed 23 unforced errors during the match. The frustration for the No 30 seed boiled over early in the first set when he violently broke his racquet while trailing 4-1, double break against him. The umpire issued a formal warning to the Frenchman as Zverev continued to pull away on the scoreboard.

Zverev eyes Sinner or Tien in milestone semifinal

This victory secures Zverev’s place in his 80th tour-level semifinal and his first-ever final four appearance at Indian Wells. The German has now reached the semifinal stage at all nine Masters 1000 tournaments throughout a career that includes 24 at this level, an Olympic gold medal and 10 Slam semifinals.

After having navigated a draw featuring Frances Tiafoe and Matteo Berrettini, Zverev enters the penultimate round with high confidence. He will face Italian second seed Jannik Sinner next.

The German established his dominance through a relentless return game that saw him break Fils four times in the 1st, 3rd, 8th, and 10th games. While Zverev remained composed, Fils saw his hopes of reaching a first Masters 1000 semifinal slip away by missing three break points, including two at the first Zverev’s service game.

The Frenchman has enjoyed a breakthrough tournament with a win over Felix Auger-Aliassime, yet he could not find the precision required to topple a top-five opponent.
