Samsonova becomes the second women’s seed out at Roland-Garros, beaten by Teichmann in straight sets

Liudmila Samsonova, the 20th seed, became the first seeded woman to exit Roland-Garros 2026 on Monday, losing 6-4, 6-4 to Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann on Court 12 in a Day 2 first-round result. The Russian is the second women’s seed out at the tournament, after Clara Tauson, the No. 21, fell to Daria Snigur on Sunday.

Teichmann, the world No. 170, was a fourth-round player at Roland-Garros in 2022 and has spent the past two years rebuilding from outside the top 100. She arrived in Paris off the back of a quarter-final run in Rabat the week before. On Monday she broke serve six times in a match the Russian never settled into.

Samsonova had reached the fourth round at Roland-Garros last year – the points she was defending will all come off. The defeat continues a difficult clay swing for a player whose own form going into Paris had been patchy.

Teichmann will face Poland’s Magdalena Frech in the second round. The Pole came through her own opener against Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse, who retired at 7-6(7), 2-1 down.
