Andreeva returns to Chatrier without trouble, opens Roland-Garros with a routine win

Mirra Andreeva (No 8), the highest-ranked woman in action on the opening day of Roland-Garros, returned to Court Philippe-Chatrier – the scene of her quarter-final exit a year ago to French wild card Loïs Boisson – and beat France’s Fiona Ferro 6-3, 6-3 to open the tournament.

Mirra Andreeva, the highest-ranked women’s seed in action on the opening day at Roland-Garros, returned to Court Philippe-Chatrier – the scene of her quarter-final exit a year ago – and beat France’s Fiona Ferro 6-3, 6-3 to move into the second round. It was the 19-year-old Russian’s 30th win of 2026.

The eighth seed arrived in Paris off the back of the most productive clay-court swing of her young career: the WTA 500 title in Linz in April, the semi-finals in Stuttgart, the final in Madrid – where she lost to Marta Kostyuk – and the quarter-finals in Rome. No woman on tour has banked more points on the surface this season.

Back on the court of last year’s nightmare

Against Ferro, the French former world No. 39 now ranked outside the top 100, Andreeva had to handle two things at once: a tricky opponent she had played before and the prospect of a partisan Chatrier crowd. The last time she walked onto that court, in last year’s quarter-final, she lost to French wild card Loïs Boisson in front of fans who booed her errors and cheered her mistakes. This time, she said afterwards, the reception was even-handed.

“Being able to win the match on the first day of a slam is super special,” Andreeva said. “I was just super excited to come back to this court.”

Andreeva will play the winner of the all-outsiders meeting between Spain’s Marina Bassols Ribera and Colombia’s Emiliana Arango in the second round, with the section opening up further if her form holds.

Sunday was a clean day for the women’s seeds. No seeded woman fell, with No. 11 Belinda Bencic with her first Roland-Garros win since 2022, No. 15 Marta Kostyuk beating Oksana Selekhmeteva on Court Simonne-Mathieu hours after a Russian missile landed near her parents’ home in Kyiv, No. 26 Hailey Baptiste saving two match points against 2021 champion Barbora Krejčíková to win 6-7(7), 7-6(6), 6-2 on her debut as a seeded Grand Slam player, and No. 32 Xinyu Wang edging Austria’s Lilli Tagger in three sets.
