Świątek lines up Kostyuk in the Roland-Garros round of 16, the four-time champion and the woman who has not lost on clay this year

Iga Świątek, the third seed and four-time Roland-Garros champion, beat compatriot Magda Linette 6-4, 6-4 on Court Philippe-Chatrier on Friday to set up a round-of-16 meeting with Marta Kostyuk – a match-up between the most successful player in the Open Era at this tournament and the woman who is undefeated on clay in 2026.

The numbers around their fourth-round contest tell two stories at the same time. Świątek now has a 43-3 career record at Roland-Garros, has won 29 of her last 30 matches at the tournament, and is the sixth woman in the Open Era to reach the round of 16 here in each of her first eight main-draw appearances — joining Chris Evert, Monica Seles, Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova and Serena Williams, and the first since Seles to do it.

Kostyuk, the 15th seed, is on a 15-match winning streak on clay this season, the longest of her career, having beaten Viktorija Golubić in straight sets earlier in the day. She has played the most clay of any woman on tour this year and has not lost a match on the surface since April.

Their head-to-head sits at 3-0 to Świątek, who has never dropped a set against the Ukrainian in those meetings, including a 6-3, 6-3 win at Roland-Garros in 2022. None of those previous contests, however, came against a Kostyuk arriving in this kind of form, and none came on the court Świątek has made her own. On Sunday, the Pole will be both defending and chasing.

The Linette contest had its own subtext. The two Poles, friends off court, had split their two previous meetings, and Linette had been the agent of the upset that triggered Świątek’s coaching change earlier this season – a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win in Miami that ended Świątek’s partnership with Wim Fissette and brought Francisco Roig, Rafael Nadal’s former coach, into her box.

The rematch did not carry the same drama. Świątek closed out an 85-minute contest with the kind of control she has produced since the Roig era began. It was her 21st win of 2026.
